Anfield fan hopes Jurgen Klopp will be able to strengthen his squad before the transfer window closes
Liverpool must “hard” sign a defender, according to Danny Murphy, who says a new center-back would give the Reds a huge boost.
Klopp delivered Liverpool’s first league title in three decades in 2019-20 when his team blew away the competition by consolidating the domestic crown with seven unbeaten games.
It was initially suggested that an impact would mark the beginning of a new era of rule for the Reds, but they could not maintain the same levels of consistency in their latest campaign.
With a five-game unbeaten run the reigning champions fall to fourth place in the standings, six points behind Manchester United’s quick setters.
Liverpool only made one trip in that time, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all struggling for form, while Klopp had also dealt with a severe back injury crisis.
Murphy feels his former club should enter the transfer market for defensive solutions with Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez still forced, with the belief that there is a lot of reliance to Joel Matip to provide cover.
The Liverpool midfielder doesn’t think anything of the blame for the team’s recent dip should be placed on Klopp’s threshold, however, as he said. talkSPORT: “The lack of mobility activity when they are badly needed is a minor concern.
“I don’t think you should go out and buy it. If you can’t find the ones you want you won’t do it.
“Obviously they’re not right, are they? That’s for sure. I know they’re not scoring, but you could see [against Man Utd in the FA Cup] to protect they are not right when [Joel] There is no matip.
“So I hope for everyone’s reason that they will do something in the last few days out the window, inspire everyone and then a good result at Tottenham [on Thursday] they will get them back on the way.
“It’s a difficult time for them. It’s a weird season. One thing is for sure, Jurgen Klopp has plenty in the bank. I don’t mean money, I mean credit. ”
When asked if he expects a new defender to arrive at Anfield before the end of the month, Murphy replied: “I really hope so. I would be very surprised if nothing happened. ”
He also suggested that the Reds are now in battle for a Champions League qualification rather than the title: “I still think it is [Klopp] there will be enough confidence in getting the top four with the offensive abilities on them as these players are at a high level.
“Just because they get a little dip, that’s it [quality] it will come back. I’m not worried about goal goals. He believes that they will get the top four, but that is not good enough now.
“Liverpool are far above that in terms of where they want to be and expectations and what the fans want.
“If they don’t sign a defender, how appropriate can Matip stay with all the games? They must [Jordan] Henderson and Matip are suitable, if they get those two they’ll be fine. ”
