The leaders of the British and Irish Lions will hold talks this month as they decide whether to go ahead with the planned trip this summer to South Africa’s World Cup winners.

The Lions are expected to play their first game in South Africa on July 3 – but uncertainty continues to haunt global sporting events due to the pandemic of coronavirus infection.

British & Irish Lions managing director Ben Calveley says a decision on the viability of the tour will be made as soon as possible, to help thousands of rugby fans who are considering the trip.

“As you would expect, we are moving forward with our plans based on the latest information available to us,” said Calveley.

“However, given the continuing uncertainty caused by the pandemic of coronavirus in both South Africa, as well as the UK and Ireland, we are acutely aware that a decision is required. do it in good time on the way forward; we can provide clarity for fans who are scheduled to travel to South Africa next summer, or for those thinking of making the trip.

“To date, the Lions Board has re-convened to discuss all available positions and is in constant contact.

“It will meet through January and into February, if necessary, to review all relevant information and data.

“Following further consultation with SA Rugby, we will update the outcome of these meetings in due course.”
