LG has unveiled its plans to build a mobile, flexible smartphone

This week LG Electronics unveiled the world’s first rollable smartphone at a press conference during the CES consumer electronics and technology expo. Prior to its official publication, the innovative idea was largely believed to be the product of a prototype or concept.

The Korean electronics company released a five-second short video teaser in which a smartphone with the display spreads out and expands into a larger device with a much larger screen. Called the LG Rollable, the smartphone is believed to work in the same way as the rollable OLED TVs do.

“Our management wanted to show that it was a real product, as there were a lot of rumors surrounding the rollable phone,” said a spokesperson for LG Nikkei in a statement earlier in the week. “As it is released at CES 2021, I can announce its launch this year.”

The mobile device comes at the heels of Samsung Electronics ’flexible smartphones that were released earlier last year and are expected to set innovation standards for smartphones this year. And while LG has yet to release specs or display size, the brand is expected to partner with China’s BOE Technology Group to help bring the mobile screen technology to life.

Ready to roll with your own LG Rollable? Unfortunately, no official date has been announced for the public so far but the device is expected to be released in the coming months.
