Another Boston legend passed away in 2020. In the midst of a Christmas celebration across the NBA, the United States announced tonight (Friday) with great sorrow that Kay C. Jones passed away at the age of 88.

Jones, the Celtics legend and a member of the Hall of Fame, won 12 championships as a player (8) and as a coach (4), 11 of which came at the Green Club. In fact, only teammates Sam Jones (10) and Bill Russell (11) have won the most championships as players in NBA history.

Jones was selected 13th in the 1956 draft after winning two consecutive college championships in the San Francisco Unisex uniform. His NBA career lasted from 1958 to 1967, all in Boston, and nine seasons were enough for him to win eight championships and become an integral part of the famous Celtics dynasty. His number 25 was set aside by the club.

He went on to record 31 years of coaching, including several years as head coach of the great Boston in the 1980s, with whom he collected two championship rings as a coach, (along with two more as an assistant coach – one with Bill Sherman at the Lakers 1972, the other with Bill Fitch at the 1981 Celtics). As a Boston coach he won for the first time against the Lakers and Pat Riley, and for the second time against Houston.

Last month, Boston also said goodbye to Tom Hayson, one of its great men on the floor, on the lines and on the microphone, who passed away at the age of 86. Hayson collaborated with Jones and also won exactly eight championships as a player and two as the team’s head coach.
