The Hermel region is notorious for the many illegal border routes into Syria that smugglers use to move various types of contraband across the border.

Smuggling occurs both ways, but it has escalated from Lebanon into Syria since the war began there in 2011 and as economic crisis and international sanctions intensify. grow.

The Lebanese media and some political parties often accuse the Iran-backed Hezbollah movement of running smuggling activity into Syria harming Lebanon. dealing with the worst economic crisis since the 1975-90 civil war.

In their statement, the Lebanese army said the warehouse belonged to a Lebanese family, but did not say whether it was used for smuggling fuel.

The explosion came at a time when there was further tensions in the region on the first anniversary of the US assassination of Qassem Soleimani in Iraq, an Iranian general who was also an important friend of the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

Fire started on Sunday as Israeli jets flew low over Lebanon and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was delivering a speech in memory of Soleimani.

The jets caused confusion about the source of the explosion. Israeli jets regularly attack Lebanese airspace and are often hit inside Syria from the Lebanese region.
