Jessica Pegula’s impressive run in Qatar came to an end on Friday as they relegated to top two champions Petra Kvitova.
Pegula, who reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open last month, was playing her seventh game in as many days after coming through to qualify in Doha – and at her that tennis eventually caught up with her against Czech superstar Kvitova.
Kvitova took the first set 6-4 but was in trouble in the second – at one level 4-2 down – before digging deep to win the final four games.
Sets just win – she will meet Garbine Muguruza in Spain in the final – a repeat of the 2018 final.
Muguruza will be newer to that one – her semi-final opponent Victoria Azerenka pulls out with a back injury before the start of play.
