Karim Khan of Britain was elected prosecutor by an International Criminal Court

The parties elected the International Criminal Court on Friday Karim Khan of Britain as the new prosecutor for a nine-year term beginning June 16.

Khan won a secret ballot, issuing three other candidates in place of the main prosecutor Fatou Bensouda. The 123-member Hague-based court, which began operations nearly 20 years ago, handles war crimes, crimes against humanity, racism and aggression crimes.

Khan will decide whether to open an investigation into the alleged Israeli war crimes in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip – an investigation that is of great concern to Israel and could warrant the arrest against senior officers.

The Jewish state preferred Khan among the four candidates on the ballot of representatives of the 123 member states in court.

Officials said he was considered pragmatic and opposed the “politics” of the court.
