Justice Minister signs extension order in Australia sexual offenses case

The justice minister said on Wednesday that he has signed a appeasement order to send a former teacher to Australia to address allegations of child sexual abuse.

Justice Minister Avi Nissenkorn said that after a year-long legal saga, the removal of Malka Leifer was Israel’s “moral responsibility”. Nissenkorn signed the order a day after the Supreme Court rejected Leifer’s last appeal.

Leifer, a former apprentice accused of sexually abusing several alumni at a Jewish school in Melbourne, has been fighting Israel since 2014.

Leifer maintains his innocence and the six-year legal battle surrounding his extension has put pressure on Israeli-Australian relations.

Nissenkorn has not announced an extension date.
