Jonny Clayton picked up his first PDC title on Masters television which helped secure 10th and final place in the 2021 Premier League.

Nine players have been named for this year’s Premier League after the World Cup final on January 3 – with 10th place left open until after the Masters.

Clayton and Mervyn King made it through to the finals with a superb tartan over the weekend – with the latter eliminating world champion Gerwyn Price in the semi-finals and the Welshman overtaking Michael van Gerwen Saturday.

The Masters final turned out to be a draw for last place in the Premier League, with Clayton’s huge 11-8 win seeing him make progress to finish off the pitch for the prestigious event.

The Welsh average averaged 104.1 in the final, maintaining the clinical finish he showed throughout the competition to beat King.

Clayton picked up his first television PDC title

The win for Clayton follows on from Price for Wales’ victory at the World Darts Cup last November, while he also performed Challenger in the 2020 Premier League against Michael Smith. in Cardiff.

However, he will now play full-time in the upcoming season, which is expected to start around Easter after being postponed from the traditional start of February.

“I’m obsessed, totally excited. I was hoping to get a place in the Premier League – it’s amazing.”

Clayton’s path to the final was very impressive, coming through decisions at the final leg against Jose de Sousa, Van Gerwen, James Wade and Peter Wright to reach the final.

“It’s an amazing feeling to get over that winning line in my first individual final,” said Clayton, who raises £ 60,000 as a champion.

“Games weren’t the best, we’ve both played better in this tournament but that was what was expected by those involved.

“I was so happy I didn’t have to play another footpath. At one point I thought Mervyn was going to take me all the way.

“He went to sleep for a leg or two and I took a chance to go in front, from there I played pretty regularly.”

Clayton only learned his place in the Premier League as he prepares to lift the Masters trophy when the news was confirmed on stage by MC John McDonald, but he fulfills a desire to competition in one of darts ’biggest events.

Clayton also works as a plasterer but will consider becoming a full-time professional after applying for his second television title and a place in the Premier League.

Entering Clayton in the Premier League sees him join Dimitri Van den Bergh, Glen Durrant and Jose de Sousa, who won their first PDC television titles in 2020.
