John Wiley & Sons: Does where older U.S. adults die affect their well-being at the end of their lives?

When people die they can affect the quality of their death and the end of life care they receive. Study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Association he found that satisfaction with end-of-life care was considered highest when individuals died at home.

Analyzing data from the National Health and Aging Survey of residential-community Medicare beneficiaries who died aged 65 or over, researchers found that home was the most common place of death for people with a mental disability, but that healthy conscious people were just as likely to die at home or in hospital. Regardless of mental health, individuals receiving hospital care were more likely to die at home.

‘Our findings suggest that older adults’ choice of place of death should be a key part of advance care planning, and that they may receive hospital care as a key means of achieving that choice. , ‘said lead author Natalie G. Regier, PhD, of the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing.
