Jewish students are protected by IHRA definition of antisemitism | Letter | News

The narrator ‘s analysis does not accept the International Holocaust Memorial Alliance’ s interpretation of antisemitism by British universities (Letters, January 7) similar to the reality we have seen on earth.

Critics of the IHRA definition have tried to portray a diktat imposed by the education secretary that would restrict freedom of speech. Their statement avoids the fact that Jewish associations of universities across the country and a Jewish students’ union, representing 8,500 students, have campaigned in good faith for our universities to accept it. explaining this.

We have done so because we are trying to protect Jewish students and not the Israeli State government. The definition clearly states that Israeli criticism cannot be considered similar to the one that is reduced against other states as an antisemitic.

The IHRA definition acknowledges that antisemitism can be subtle, and our experience confirms this. The abuse we face is often overshadowed in political communication. When Jewish students protesting against Jeremy Corbyn’s visit to Bristol University described being described as “filthy zio” and “puppet of Zionist lobbying”, and “asked again who was pays [them] to be there “, and said that they should” go back to where they are [they] belonged ”, they did not encounter criticism about the State of Israel; instead, they were experiencing naked antisemitism.

It is time to consider the interpretation of IHRA and how it has been adopted by British universities to reveal the true truth of Jewish students. Retired judges, Middle East-based activists and far-left non-Jewish academics on the front line are not perpetuating antisemitism on the ground – we are.

We believe that this definition provides the best protection for Jewish students, and we are the most qualified people to make that judgment.
