The streets to the north London awakened by color today as hundreds of Jewish children dressed as the festival of Purim.

Small police officers, Beefeaters, bears, Dobby the House Elf and a Boris Johnson they jumped through Stamford Hill while respecting the tradition of the ages.

The event would normally see parades through the streets but Covid ‘s pandemic meant that this year’ s performances were a friendly, socially distant affair.

Dating back around 2,500 years, the ancient festival celebrates the survival of the Jews who were marked for death in ancient Persia.

It marks the courage of Esther, Queen of Persia, who stopped the genocide of her people after the adviser to the Persian king Haman plotted a plan to assassinate all Jews.

These youngsters pulled off all the stops while wearing clown wigs, make-up and fluorescent swimsuits to celebrate the festival today

THE ISLANDER MAKED A STORY OF PURIM

Jewish holiday Purim marks the liberation of the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire from a plot intended to exterminate them.

The story, which is recorded in the Bible Book of Esther, tells the story of how an adviser to King Ahasuerus whom Haman intended to kill all the arguments, just to undo his wicked plot to King Esther’s wife and Mordecai’s adopted father.

Haman had chosen a day on which to exterminate all the Jewish people and had issued an order with the King’s seal, ordering that all Jewish men, women and children be killed.

But Esther – chosen as Ahasuerus’ wife by taking part in a beauty contest and hiding the fact that she was Jewish – later persuaded the King to issue a new order that would allow him the arguments arise and defend themselves – thus saving their lives.

The story is read aloud in synagogues while children are traditionally dressed as Esther, or the King.

In the synagogue they find football rattles and sound makers to drown Haman’s name.

In Israel, even adults go to work dressed and dressed to go to the synagogue.

The Purim Jewish holiday – which means ‘lot’ in ancient Persia – is celebrated annually on the 14th of the month of Hebrew Adar – which falls between the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
