‘I’ve been feeling at home since day one! ‘- Odegaard expresses delight after opening Arsenal’s scoring account

The Norwegian midfielder was in good spirits after the Gunners helped see Olympiacos in the Europa League

Martin Odegaard expressed his delight after opening his goalscoring account for Arsenal on Thursday, claiming he has “felt at home since day one” of his loan spell at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners ran out 3-1 winners against Olympiacos in the first leg of their round of 16 Europa League ties, with Odegaard, Gabriel and Mohamed Elneny capturing the goals for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Odegaard’s stunning strike in the first half ended with an impressive display from the Real Madrid loanee, who says he has settled into life at the Emirates Stadium perfectly because of the team’s healthy spirit in the dressing room.

What was said?

“It’s a big win for us, a good result with three goals away from home and winning in this tournament is always good,” said Odegaard BT Sport.

“The mentality in this team is really good. Very happy with everything. We showed the spirit in the team and the way we return to each other. If one player makes a mistake then we re- That’s what it’s all about, being a team. When one player makes a mistake you have to go back as a team.

“I wanted to get a glimpse of a goal, luckily I got a good hit and it went in. I’ve been feeling at home since day one, I’m happy to be here and feel great.

“It’s just half-time. We have to keep going. We have a big game on Saturday and we have to get ready for next Thursday.

“It’s very important, we’re not where we want to be in the league so this is very important for us and the chance to get Champions League football next year.”

How did Arsenal beat Olympiacos?

Arsenal were knocked out of the Europa League by Olympiacos last season, but this time they performed a team that was strongly against the Greek side at Karaiskaki Stadium.

Odegaard gave the visitors the lead they deserved in the 34th minute of the tournament, firing home a terrifying 25-yard effort that defeated Jose Sa all to finish in the Olympiacos net.

Unfortunately, the Gunners gave the hosts a way back into the game just before the hour mark, with Youssef El-Arabi defeating Bernd Leno from long range after pushing bad way the German keeper out of the back.

Arteta’s men were not denied, however, as Gabriel restored their lead in the 79th minute after rising beautifully in the box to take home Willian’s fragile cross.

Elneny finished the scoring with an intimidating shot five minutes from time, and Arsenal will now have an overall healthy win to defend when Olympiacos arrive in the Emirates next week.

What now?

Before he can prepare for the second leg to start, the Gunners must first turn their attention to the big north London derby clash against Tottenham on Sunday.

Spurs are currently seventh in the Premier League position, three positions above Arsenal, but Arteta’s men can move to within four points of their rivals with a victory at the Emirates.
