Is Nomadland True story?

There is definitely a gray area when the film needs to be categorized as true or not. When you look at all the events taking place throughout the film as it is, Nomadland cannot be considered a true story. However, it is inspired by real people because it is based on the non-fiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the 21st Century with journalist Jessica Bruder. Both the film and the book focus on those who had to choose a nomad life because of America’s economic crisis which put them in a difficult financial position. They give up their houses and live in vans looking for jobs. As Fern says in the film, “I’m not homeless, I’m just homeless.”

Nomadland Cast Real Nomads

One of the reasons that the lines between fiction and non-fiction are blurred in the film is because the film features real nominees. When he wrote the book that inspired this non-fiction drama, Bruder traveled five states for about three years and spoke to more than 50 people. They were all elderly people who lost their jobs, homes or bank savings. Three of the older people – Charlene Swankie, Bob Wells, and Linda May – we see in the film. They are all a guide for Fern who is just growing up as part of their lifestyle. May, who is the main character in the book, lives in her jeep as she tries to save money to build a stable house. May’s character in the film is very similar.
