Is I care a lot based on a true story? Is Marla Grayson based on a true story?

I care a lot it’s not based on a true story, and Marla Grayson is not a real person. All characters and plotlines included I care a lot they are fictional. The only part of I Care A Lot that is kinda, sorta based on a true story is the foundation behind the Marla’a defense scam.

Writer / director J Blakeson was inspired in part by true news stories about shady defenders like Marla Grayson. In an interview for the film’s press releases, Blakeson said, “It started when I saw news of real predators defending the system and taking advantage of their wards. And I was horrified. Imagine opening your door one day while someone is standing there holding a piece of paper that gives them full legal power. That thought scared me – and it looked very relevant right now. It was about topics that I am interested in studying – topics about the power of authority, about people against profit, control against freedom, humanity against bureaucracy. It reminded me of Kafka The Test. I knew I had to check it out. ”

Blakeson went on to say that he went “down this Google rabbit hole” in terms of professional defenders in America. (Blakeson speaks English.)

“[I was] read a lot of news and were amazed at the horrific things that so many of them were doing – especially since most of what they did was in a legal place, ”he said. “This brought me a lot of interesting topics, such as ambition, The American Dream, and being a product. So the story began there. I sat and wrote it on my own and quickly came into what is now I care about a lot. ”

If you want to go down a rabbit hole like Blakeson did, check out New Yorker reporter Rachel Aviv’s excellent 2017 essay on the defense philosophy, “How Old People Lose Their Rights . ” It’s a good read, and undoubtedly inspired many elements of Blakeson’s script.
