In recent weeks, we have also been informed of threats by Iranian elements against American vessels in the Persian Gulf. The American aircraft carrier “Nimitz” has entered the bay, backed away, and according to the latest reports, is once again returning for a cruise in front of the Bander Abbas port. Added to this are Iranian reports of continued uranium enrichment to the 20% level, which is a blatant violation of the nuclear agreements. All of these issues are interrelated in a Gordian knot.

The premise of the last two decades is that the Iranians are undermining stability in the Middle East according to their interests. During this period, they make good use of the governmental instability in the United States, and as mentioned, also in Israel, and work to carry out terrorist attacks on the northern and southern borders. The interest is clear: beyond the chronic whims of war, the Iranians are trying to produce a lever that will lead to their achievements in the diplomatic arena – especially in light of the sanctions and the American intention to return to the nuclear deal. After all, Joe Biden, the US president-elect, has already stated that he is more than interested in returning to the negotiating table with Iran, so the Iranians are trying to get to the table with more achievements, and perhaps operate more significant levers.
So far, Israel has managed to prevent border degradation. The question is will what was be what will be? Surely it can be assumed that without the backing umbrella of Donald Trump in Washington, we will soon see a different mood in our counties.
