The International Space Station will be visible to the naked eye, so no telescope will be needed.

Other parts of the country will see the bright dot travel across the sky the next day.

The station will pass Sydney on Tuesday at 8.33pm and will appear in the sky for just two minutes.

Melbourne residents will be able to watch the space station run from 8.31pm to 8.36pm.

It will pass Canberra at 8.32pm and depart again at 8.36pm.

The space station will pass Darwin a few minutes later at 8.40pm.

Spectators need to be quick as the dot in the sky will only be for a maximum of five to seven minutes.

What you will see is this very bright star, the brightest in the early evening sky. It will be like something else in the world, ‘astronaut Dr Brad Tucker told the ABC.

Dr Tucker said it was rare to see the space station – which orbits the Earth about 15 hours a day – so clearly.

‘It’s not visible all the time. The only time you see it in the early evening or early morning is when the sunlight turns off and comes back to earth. ‘

Research conducted aboard the ISS often requires one or more of the unusual conditions present in Earth’s orbit, such as low gravity or oxygen.

ISS studies have examined human research, space medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, astronomy and meteorology.
