Instantly rewrite Google Video Chats with Otter.ai

Otter.ai is a hard service that can turn your conversations into transcripts – ones that usually require very little post – fact editing. Especially if the quality of your call was reasonable and your subject doesn’t mumble, as I do.

Now, if simple installation Chrome extension, you will be able to use otter.ai to automatically rewrite your Google Meet calls in real time. It is especially useful if your work relies on Google Meet to connect with colleagues.

The extension works for both free and paid otter.ai users. You can only rewrite 600 minutes per month with a maximum of 40 minutes per recording. If your meeting is going to be long, you may want to stop using the extension and instead record it as two separate files, then rewrite those separately and put them together.

Also, know that the extension will not automatically start recording any Google Meet video chats you’re in – great for privacy, but something to keep in mind if you’re hoping to have transcripts of every meeting you ever take. First you need to click on the extension icon and make sure you are logged into your otter.ai account. When you do, you will see this little window:

Click the “Record” button to begin, which will change the window to a live transcript of what otter.ai hears. Additionally, you will be able to enable a closed captioning mode that sits as a cover at the bottom of your Google Meet window. (However, since Google Meet has its own closed captioning feature, it’s up to you to decide which one you prefer.)

You can end the transcription session by clicking on the “pause registration” button, and then the “pause recording” button that appears. Your transcript will be automatically saved to your otter.ai account – no edits or deletions in the extension. The audio of the meeting will be saved to your otter.ai account as well.

That last fact is crucial; if your work is very security conscious or you would not be happy about the number of special meetings anywhere outside of its internal network, you may not want to use the otter.ai extension. Do not violate non-disclosure agreements, privacy policies, or anything else that may offend you. You may think you are innocently rescheduling a meeting to boost your productivity, but your company’s IT / security teams may see things differently.
