Indonesian plane crash: The country has found the black boxes

Authorities in Indonesia announced today (Sunday) that they have found two black boxes and other parts of a Syrian airplane that crashed yesterday. This, along with body parts found as well. Indonesian Chief of Staff Hadi Tajhanto commented on the findings, saying “hopefully, we will recover them soon,” without providing an estimated period of time for that.

Flight number SJ-182 of Srivijaya Air took off yesterday from the Indonesian capital Jakarta. The plane disappeared and lost contact with it minutes after takeoff, with 62 passengers on board. He lost about three kilometers in height in about a minute, according to data from the website Flightradar24.

The plane took off for a domestic flight from the state capital on its way to Pontianak in the western Kalimantan province around 12:30 Israel time. According to flight records, this is a 27-year-old Boeing B737-500 aircraft. A Boeing spokeswoman said: “We are aware of media reports from Jakarta, and are closely monitoring the situation. We are working to gather more information.”

Flightradar24, a website that tracks routes around the world, reported on its Twitter account that the flight “lost more than 10,000 feet (about 3 kilometers) in less than a minute, about four minutes after taking off from Jakarta.” According to the website, the plane reached a height of only 250 feet (about 76 meters) above the ground before losing contact with it.

As you may recall, in October 2018 a Boeing 737 Max plane of the airline “Air Air” crashed in Indonesia 13 minutes after takeoff. There were 189 passengers and crew on board. The plane then crashed as a result of a malfunction in the MCAS system installed in the model without the knowledge of the airlines and pilots. The plane that disappeared today is an older model, two generations before the “Max”, and does not have the system that caused the previous crash and another crash in Ethiopia, in which 157 people were killed.
