The actor, 60, hit headlines when police arrested him and a Divine sex worker after they seized their illegal connection in a car parked near Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles .

And in a new interview on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, the British star admitted that his frustration after watching his first Hollywood film Nine Months caused the incident.

Recalling the headline-making scandal, he said: ‘I was about to launch my first Hollywood film – I had an incredible time. I had the problem – that was my first Hollywood movie and I had just seen it.

‘The film was going to come out a week or two later, and I had a bad feeling about it. I went to see a screening. Everyone there was great, but I was so horrified I wasn’t in good spirits. ‘

With his feelings worsening as he questioned his own performance in the romantic comedy – which also starred Julianne Moore and Robin Williams – Hugh revealed that he had gone down in grief, before ‘ one thing to another ‘.

He said: ‘I got Ken Russell lunch – and one thing led to another. I was just deceived in myself. I don’t know what was going on. That was Nine Months. ‘

At the time, Hugh was arrested near Sunset Boulevard after paying around £ 45 ($ 60) for Divinity to have oral sex with him in his car.

She was sentenced to 180 days in prison for engaging in illegal conduct in a public place, and had also broken her lawsuit for previous prostitution charges.

In a statement at the time Hugh said: ‘Last night I did something completely insane. I have hurt people I love and people I work with are ashamed. For both I am heavier than I can ever say. ‘

The theologian, real name Stella Marie Thompson, went on to make about $ 1 million through the publicity surrounding the scandal.

After the scandal, Hugh and Elizabeth stayed together for several years, before ending their 13-year romance in 2000. They remain close friends.
