How to measure Cardio Fitness with Apple Watch

  • You won’t see Cardio Fitness level data points for every activity recorded by Apple Watch, here’s what Apple says:
    • Apple Watch can record an estimate of VO2 between 14 and 60 mL / kg / min when you do brisk walking, jogging, or running outdoors with continuous heart rate measurement. It can estimate your VO2 max if you start one of these workouts in the Workouts app
    • VO2 max is tested for users 20 and older. Most people can improve their VO2 max with more intense and frequent cardiovascular exercise. Certain conditions or medications that restrict your heart rate can cause an overdose of your VO2 max. You can state that you are taking certain medications in the health information.
    • You can read more details about Cardio Fitness in the Cardio Fitness section of the Health app.

Important thing to keep in mind: this means you won’t see Cardio Fitness data measured by Apple Fitness + workouts (unless Apple expands what types of exercises record VO2 max).

Interestingly, Cardio Fitness levels appear even for walk / walk / outdoor running workouts you did before iOS 14.3. You can tap the schedule icons at the top of Cardio Fitness to view daily, weekly, monthly and yearly data (see more on this below).

Apple notes that cycling is another great aerobic exercise to improve Cardio Fitness, but for now, it’s not like monitoring bike rides on an Apple Watch record Cardio Fitness data for now.
