How many apartments have been in the country in the past year and which city leads the list?

There were about 2.7 million dwellings and housing units in Israel at the end of July 2020 – an increase of 57,003 dwellings (2%) compared to 2019, according to the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), which published data on dwellings and buildings in Israel today (Tuesday). About 2.5 million apartments were in municipalities and local councils and about 236.7 thousand were in regional councils.

The CBS noted that in the years 2020-2012, there was an increase of about 16% in the number of apartments in municipalities and local councils – an increase of about 354.3 thousand residential apartments.

During 2020, the highest rate of dwellings was in the Central District (approximately 25% of all dwellings) and in the Tel Aviv District (approximately 20%). In contrast, the lowest rate was in the Judea and Samaria district (about 3% of the dwellings). The segmentation shows that a significant increase in the number of dwellings last year compared to 2019 was recorded in the localities of Harish (an increase of 46%) and Rosh HaAyin (16%).

The data also show that the proportion of buildings with 50 or more apartments in the large cities with more than 100,000 residents was 1.8% of all buildings. The cities where the proportion of buildings was higher than the national average were Ashdod (5%), Bat Yam (4%), Netanya (3%), Tel Aviv and Holon (2%) and Ashkelon – 1.8%.

The data also show that the lowest rate of buildings with one or two apartments is in Bnei Brak and Bat Yam, while the highest rate was in Be’er Sheva and Ashkelon (about 70% in each).

The cities of Kfar Saba, Rishon Lezion, Rehovot, Ashdod and Netanya also have a high proportion of buildings with one or two apartments (over 44%). About 25% of the buildings in Jerusalem, Holon and Haifa had 5-3 apartments, in 33% of the buildings in Haifa and Bnei Brak there were 10-6 apartments. About 38% of the buildings in Bnei Brak had 20-11 apartments and in 36% of the buildings in Bat Yam there were 50-21 apartments. In contrast, in Rishon Lezion, Kfar Saba, Bnei Brak and Beit Shemesh, the rate of buildings with 50 or more apartments was lower than the national rate.
