How Ella Emhoff became the star of New York Fashion Week

It began with a carefully chosen consecration suit.

A week later, the 22-year-old was co-sponsored by IMG Models, the only modeling group that represents the heavyweights of Hailey Bieber, Paloma Elsesser and Karlie Kloss, among many others.

And this week, a Parson School of Design student has become a rising star in New York Fashion week. Making her first runway for Proenza Schouler at the brand’s autumn / winter 2021 fair, Emhoff rode down the catwalk with three minimalist looks for the show filmed at the Parrish Museum of Art New York.

“It was my first ever fashion trip and I have to say I was a little apprehensive,” said Emhoff. “I definitely lost some sleep the night before … I’m walking for the first time. I’m in such a professional environment for the first time. ”

To coincide with the show, Emhoff attended a panel discussion with designers Proenza Schouler, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, as part of the official New York Fashion Week program. Emhoff, who did summer courses at Central Saint Martins in London in high school, said she has enjoyed modeling so far.

“I think my favorite part is just wearing the clothes; seeing the clothes, being able to rub them, looking at the crafts – it’s also a fun way to get dressed, ”she said. “It’s almost like acting. You put a different character on it. ”

To round off three of fashion week’s wins, Emhoff released her first five-piece knitwear collection, which sold out within 30 minutes.

The fine arts student usually prefers to sell her paintings. Earlier in the year, Emhoff stopped several knitting pieces through her Instagram account. To get in, people had to donate at least ten dollars to For The Gworls or The Okra Project, two charities working to support the Black trans community.

“Of course I have a bigger platform now, and I’m excited to share a lot of things that are important to me, and do a little good,” Emhoff told the New York Times. “There are a lot of people out there who need a lot of help. If I can do anything to help with that, I want to, and I think, this opportunity will be very beneficial towards that. ”

The big goal though? To start her own fashion label. “The dream is my own brand,” Emhoff said during New York Fashion Week. “I want to see boys, girls, people – I want everyone to see my colored striped pants or dresses. That would be great. ”
