Green Arrow has worked with a wide range of friends over the years. With partners like Black Canary and Arsenal, Oliver Queen has a set of crime fighting partners that are solely spoiled by the Bat Family.
One of Oliver’s most intimate partners is his sister, Emiko.
Emiko Queen first appeared Green arrow # 18, with Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino. Oliver’s half-sister is the daughter of Robert Queen and the murderer known as Shado, Emiko. Eventually, however, Robert sacrificed himself to save Emiko from Komodo. Emiko realized she was Robert’s daughter and killed Komodo herself. Afterwards, Emiko followed Oliver back to Seattle, wanting to be his apprentice. Emiko moved in with Oliver and fought crime with Green Arrow. Although the two did not share any previous experiences, they bonded and became true brothers.
In Green arrow # 1, starring Benjamin Percy and Otto Schmidt, Oliver and Emiko were a very dynamic duo. Emiko and Green Arrow went up against enemies like the Clock King until Shado returned to the city. Emiko apparently betrayed Oliver by siding with her mother and entering the ninth sinister circle. In reality, though, Emiko was joining the group, working to help Oliver from the inside. Shado was very upset with Emiko’s betrayal and took revenge by kidnapping her and taking her daughter to Japan.
During a brief stint with Shado, Emiko helped her mother fight off the Yakuza. Seeing her daughter’s fierce skill and independence in action, Shado let Emiko return to Seattle with Oliver in. Green arrow # 7, with Benjamin Percy and Stephen Byrne. Emiko returned inside Green arrow # 15, by Benjamin Percy and Juan Ferreyra.
Helping Oliver and his friends against a group of fascist ex-cops, called the Deputy Squad, Emiko identified herself as the new Red Arrow. As a Red Arrow, Emiko was sure she was no longer Oliver’s side, working as a partner instead. Emiko designed new clothes for herself while she continued to work with Green Arrow against the Ninth Circle. Red Arrow was instrumental in proving Oliver’s innocence as an accused murderer, who helped bring down the Ninth Circle.
Ro Titans for teens # 20, with Adam Glass and Bernard Chang, Red Arrow had expanded its role in DC Universe by joining the Teen Titans. During her tenure, Emiko became Damian Wayne ‘s right-hand man on the team and developed a romance with Kid Flash. Red Arrow remained part of the Teenage Titans until they disbanded Titans for teens # 47, with Robbie Thompson and Javier Fernandez. Still, Emiko enrolled at Teen Titans Academy, appearing as a student in Teen Titans Academy # 1, with Tim Sheridan and Rafa Sandoval.
There are several similarities to Emiko Queen to Thea Queen, played by Willa Holland on Arrow. Both characters are Oliver Queen’s half-sisters. The main difference here is that Thea was said to be the daughter of Malcolm Merlyn in-house Arrow season 2. Although Emiko has a different mother than Oliver, Thea has a different father than her half-brother.
Emiko and Thea both became crime fighting partners to Green Arrow. Thea originally wanted to be known as Red Arrow, just like Emiko. Eventually, however, Thea Speedy got to be her codename. A suit design for both characters looks almost the same.
Plus, Thea seemed to get inspiration from Mia Dearden, another version of Speedy in the comics. Thea’s middle name is Dearden, and she shares Oliver’s same sisterly connection to Mia. It’s funny to think about the similarities between Thea and Emiko, considering how Emiko was changed Arrow in the seventh season of the show, played by Sea Shimooka. In fact, this version of Emiko was the director of the Nine Circles, with more malicious intent for Oliver.
Overall, it’s interesting to see the history of sisterly partners in Green Arrow’s life, ranging from Mia to Thea to Emiko. Ultimately, Emiko is just one part of Oliver’s history across several mediums.
