Honeywell buys Sparta Systems for $ 1.3B to move into life sciences

Software business giant Honeywell Inc. said. today that they are buying life sciences software company Sparta Systems Inc. for $ 1.3 billion to expand the reach of their Honeywell Forge platform.

With annual revenues of more than $ 36 billion, Honeywell manufactures industrial equipment and related products exclusively for the aerospace industry. The Honeywell Forge platform is a suite of cloud applications that help companies analyze sensory data from “internet of things” systems to improve their day-to-day operations. For example, manufacturers can use Forge to inspect inspection records from their production line equipment to identify any issues.

Sparta Systems sells quality control and management software specifically for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology, medical device, food and beverage, chemical and agrochemical industries. Its software is provided as a service, and it also has an artificial intelligence facility.

Sparta’s flagship offering is TrackWise Digital, which is built on top of the Salesforce platform and provides reporting and analytics capabilities to help customers ensure quality and compliance. Sparta also sells QualityWise.ai, which enhances natural language processing, signal detection and confidence levels for recommendations to TrackWise Digital.

The plan is to integrate these devices with Honeywell Forge, thus extending that platform to nearby life sciences and industries, Honeywell said. The company already offers automation technologies, systems and services to life sciences customers through their Fast Automation suite that developers use new vaccines and treatments.

Honeywell’s Head of Connected Enterprise, Que Dallara, said Sparta’s tools will help strengthen the link between quality and product data for life sciences manufacturers. “Our combined offerings will make it easier for customers to gain critical insights from manufacturing and quality data that could improve their manufacturing processes while ensuring product quality, patient safety, and supply chain continuity, ”he said.

Honeywell said it developed TrackWise Digital with some of its own AI and machine learning technologies and will connect the platform with operational data from other areas of the customer’s business.

Analyst Holger Mueller of Constellation Research Inc. said. to SiliconANGLE that it makes sense for Honeywell to add quality management system capabilities to the Forge platform.

“Sparta Systems has a strong footprint in the pharmaceutical industry and this will definitely help Honeywell to expand its wallets division in that sector,” Mueller said. “Not surprisingly, Honeywell is hopeful that it will be able to take Sparta’s QMS capabilities to more usable and vertical issues, but that is more difficult and only the future can tell how successful it will be. Another inflection point is that Honeywell is now moving beyond analysis and insights, engaging in business and activities with QMS. ”

Honeywell said the purchase will close by the end of the first quarter of 2021.
