‘He’s a humble man’: McKennie needs to improve, says Juventus boss Pirlo

The 22-year-old midfielder has made 22 appearances for the Bianconeri since joining from Schalke and the coach sees plenty of room for growth.

Andrea Pirlo says Weston McKennie needs to improve if he is to become a Juventus star.

The midfielder joined Serie A alongside in August from Schalke on an initial loan that will become permanent at the end of the season.

McKennie, 22, has started 14 of his 22 appearances for the Italian champions, scoring four goals and scoring two assists.

Coach Juve Pirlo is happy to have the United States international as part of his squad but is aware that he is still developing.

“McKennie is young and has so much room for improvement,” Pirlo said at a news conference. “We were the fastest signers and we are delighted to be part of the squad.

“He is a humble man who always wants to improve, especially at a technical level. He needs to improve when he gets the ball, but he knows that this is just the beginning. ”

Alvaro Morata recently returned to action for Juve after recovering from injuries but has started just three of their last six games in all competitions. Pirlo is confident he is in good shape to start against Sampdoria on Saturday.

“I never said Morata was struggling,” he said. “He had an adoption problem, but now he’s feeling well. [On Saturday] it will be at its best. He is enthusiastic, calm and we consider him very important for Juventus.

“He will start with Cristiano Ronaldo tomorrow.”

German midfielder Sami Khedira has not appeared for the Turin giants this season and is expected to leave before the transfer window expires or his contract expires this season. Pirlo declined to say whether there is a January move on the cards. however.

“We’ve talked about it already, he’s been training with us since the beginning of the season, we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Juve are seven points behind Serie A leaders AC Milan, although Pirlo has a game at their side. After a weekend trip to Sampdoria, they take on Inter in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals on Tuesday.
