Happy Birthday to Harry Styles, King of Charming Knitwear

Happy Birthday to you, Harry Styles! There is much to be said about the English singer, who is 27 today, but his fashion sense is certainly successful in the top three. Styles is one of Hollywood’s favorite guys today, regularly bringing fun, hilarious courtship and loads of Gucci to the red carpet or on stage. But it’s not slow tailoring at all. In fact, one of Styles ’favorite names is his retro, whimsical, and utterly charming sweater collection. And as the winter months move on, it’s clear that Styles is the winter style image that our weaving looks like we should be repeating.

Any speech to Styles knitwear must start with the viral sweater shirt covered with sheepskin that he would wear back in 2019. The kitschy style, by Lanvin, might seem geeky on anyone else – but on Styles, it was more agreed with rockstar. He paired it with wide-leg pants and tucked it over a rolled-up shirt, giving it a cool, effortless feel. As well as an internet break was the multi-colored, embroidered JW Anderson cardigan he wore for display on the Today show last year. It grew so big that #HarryStylesCardigan even moved on to TikTok, with different creators showing you how to make your own one at home.

But let’s go back to vests for a second. It takes real talent to make them look modern and not like your grandfather used to be. Styles – several times – have proven that they can be spooky and fresh with the right look. One of his best sweater vest moments was last year, when he played for Sirius XM with a yellow polka-dot style from Lanvin with high-waisted pants and a collared shirt underneath. This layering trick has been one of his signature moves; he is also wearing a lace shirt, peter-pan collar under a blue crewneck sweater, finished with a pearl necklace.

Winter can be very stressful for clothing, but Styles show a way to stay warm and keep your mood fresh. These little touches have cemented Styles ’status as a true sweater connoisseur – and his high-waisted heels almost make us wish winter wasn’t coming to an end. (Almost.) Below are Styles’ top five sweater seasons ever – and how you get the look this season too.
