January 21 (UPI) – HBO released a trailer for its documentary Fake famous on Thursday. Journalist Nick Bilton makes his first guided tour with the social media impact documentary.
To better understand the industry that created social media, Bilton conducts an experiment in the film. He throws three unknowns with social media miniatures and goes on to turn them into social media stars.
The three partners include Dominique Druckman, progressive actor, Chris Bailey, fashion designer and Wylie Heiner, real estate assistant. They get support offers, freebies and even paid advertising thanks to the Bilton test.
The film explores methods such as buying followers, faking communication with bots and building Instagram personalities. Bilton’s concept was to prove that social media celebrities are just Fake Famous.
Fake famous also includes commentary from tech commentators from New York and Bloomberg times, author and actor Justine Bateman, and more experts in the field of social media. Bilton hopes to teach viewers how to read between lines like, followers and content they see on social media.
Fake famous premieres February 2 at 9pm EST / PST on HBO. It will also be available for streaming on HBO and HBO Max.
