The latest version of Google’s camera app adds a new option to permanently disable Auto Night Sight mode, meaning users who want to override memory don’t have to be turned off by hand.

The new feature applies to Google’s latest Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G smartphones called Night Sight, so far, automatically triggered in dark burning situations. This latest change allows users to permanently turn off the feature where it would have previously been turned back on every time the camera app was launched.

The heavily copied Night Sight feature started the use of computer imaging to deliver high-quality images, even in the darkest environments. However, while Night Sight is often the best option for taking photos in the dark, it takes longer to process each image, requiring the phone to be kept stable for longer and sometimes it can produce images that look a bit preprocessed and unnatural. What’s worse is that Night Sight would sometimes be turned on automatically when there seemed to be enough light for a normal picture.

The ability to turn Night Sight on or off manually gives users full control over when the feature is used and causes the new Pixel models to work in the same way as older generation Pixels that do not have am Auto Night Sight feature.

To use the new feature, you need Google Camera version 8.1.200 which should be available to you soon through the Google Play store.
