Google burns search engine amid diversity, search freedom controversy

(Reuters) – Margaret Mitchell, a Google Alphabet Inc. researcher, said on Friday, after a week-long study found that she moved electronic files outside the company amid a battle over search freedom and diversity .

Google said in a statement that Mitchell violated the company’s code of conduct and security policies. Mitchell, who announced her shooting on Twitter, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Google’s ethics have been scrutinized in a fake intelligence search unit since Black scientist Timnit Gebru was fired in December, which has prompted thousands of Google employees to complain. She and Mitchell, who is white, had called for more diversity among Google search staff and were concerned that the company was beginning to question critical search about their results.

Gebru said she was fired by Google after questioning an order not to publish a paper claiming AI that imitation language could harm peripheral numbers.

Mitchell and Gebru co-led an ethics team in artificial intelligence for about two years.

Google AI search director Zoubin Ghahramani and a firm’s legal representative informed Mitchell’s shooting about her shooting Friday in a meeting called without warning, an acquaintance of the case said. The person stated that little explanation was given for the appointment. Google declined to comment.

Google employee Alex Hanna said on Twitter that the company was running a “smear campaign” against Mitchell and Gebru, with whom she worked closely.

Google did not immediately comment on these requests. His statement on Mitchell said: “We confirmed a number of breaches of our code of conduct, in addition to our security policies, which included the deletion of confidential business-sensitive documents and private data of other employees. ”

Google has hired top scientists with promises of search freedom, but the limits are tested as researchers continue to write about the negative effects of technology and offer unobtrusive views on their employer’s results. .
