For a few weeks now, I’ve been looking at one of the new Apple M1 Mac Minis instead of the aging iMac. All the super fast Apple silicon and round shape of Mac Mini is so disappointing. All I have to do is buy a new monitor and maybe a nice new keyboard to go with that shiny new Mac Mini.
In preparation, I looked at the price of Apple’s Magic Keyboard. It’s a nice keyboard with its Space Gray finish and has an extended keyboard version that’s perfect for spreadsheet use. Unfortunately, Apple’s Magic keyboard costs the best part of $ 150 and doesn’t even have backlit keys! I’m sorry, Apple, but that’s far too much. I’m sure I can do better if I look around.
Well, I did better by looking around. Slimchi’s new range of Slimchi keyboards come in both wireless and wireless versions and are made specifically for Macs. The key locations and shape on the Satechi X keyboards are similar to Apple’s Magic keyboards and the keys have the same markings and the keys are the same square shape that Apple uses. There is a version on the back of the Slim X modules that can turn off the keyboard if it is not going to be used for a while. An internal rechargeable battery provides power for months of use without the backlight enabled. With the backlight turned on, the battery will operate for a week or two before needing to be recharged. The backlight level can be easily adjusted or disabled by using the function keys.
The battery inside the slim X is easily recharged using the provided USB-C cable. Both Slim X keyboards can use the cable as a direct wireless connection by plugging the keyboard into a USB port in addition to a Mac. It even recharges the internal battery at the same time.

Diagnosis: The Satechi X1 and Slim X3 keyboards are significantly more affordable than Apple’s Magic Keyboard.
