A German court is expected to deliver its verdict on Monday in a right-wing terrorist trial that attacked a synagogue on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in Judaism, killing two people after failing to enter the building.
October. 9, 2019, an attack is considered one of the worst anti-Semitic attacks in post-German history. The 28-year-old defender, Stephan Balliet, is said to have posted a screed against a fighter before attempting to make his way into the synagogue in the east city of Halle while and broadcast the attack live on a popular stadium.
Federal prosecutors have called on the Naumburg state court, meeting in nearby Magdeburg, to convict Balliet of murder, attempted murder, incitement to hatred and attempted racism. They urged judges to find him “very guilty,” meaning he would be barred from being released early after 15 years.
