Gantz pushes a move for civil marriage in Israel

Defense and Justice Minister Benny Gantz has decided to make civil marriage possible for married couples outside the country’s borders, Ynet learned Monday.

Because of the coronavirus crisis and the closure of the skies, many couples are unable to leave the country for marriage in a civil marriage abroad and then return to Israel and register as married.

Last week, Gantz held a meeting with Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit, among others. During the meeting, Ganz decided to put down a legal memorandum that would allow the Ministry of Justice to register these couples as married.

“The principle of equality is one of the foundations of democracy,” Ganz said. “The current situation does not allow us to remain incapacitated when the sky was closed, the basic right was denied to many Israeli citizens.”
