French Magazine Charlie Hebdo Faces Flak for Cartoon Portraying Meghan Markle as George Floyd

The cartoon comes days after the Duchess of Sussex, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey, accused British journalists as well as the racist royal family. American biracial actor Meghan said that although she was pregnant with her son Archie, a member of the royal family was worried about how dark his skin could be.

During the interview, she also said she had suicidal thoughts because she felt lonely and miserable as a working member of the royal family.

Buckingham Palace later issued a statement saying the claims were “troubling” and would be investigated in private. Defending the monarchy against allegations of racism, Prince William said in a statement earlier this week, “We are not really a racist family”.

The cartoon sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many users calling it “offensive”. Dr Halima Begum, Chief Executive of the Runnymede Trust, a UK-based race equality think tank, also said the coverage was “wrong at every level”.

In a tweet, she wrote, “This doesn’t push boundaries, make someone laugh or challenge racism. It spoils the issues and causes crime, in everything.”
