Freestyle Skiing: China Gu is making history with double gold in a world

.

The 17-year-old won the semi-gold medal in the Buttermilk Ski Area on Friday, before managing in windy weather to capture gold in the slopestyle final the next day.

Gu got 84.23 on her first run, which proved enough for Saturday’s victory. Swiss Mathilde Gremaud was second with a score of 77.15. Megan Oldham of Canada was third with 76.18.

“It was very windy … A lot of girls had to push through a very difficult situation. A big shout out to everyone out there, ”said Gu, who has an American father and a Chinese mother, after her second gold.

“Personally, I took a big drop while training and my confidence increased a bit and I wasn’t sure how good I was feeling during the competition.

“Coming back, being able to take my full run away makes me proud of myself, to be able to get through that pressure and self-doubt. ”

Gu kicked off her first Winter X game in January and won both slopestyle and superpipe events as well as bronze in the big air to emerge as one of the top contenders for a gold medal at the Winter Olympics in Beijing the next February.
