France detects the first case of a South African virus variant

PARIS, France

The French Ministry of Health on Thursday confirmed the first case of the new coronavirus variant found in South Africa.

The new strain was marked by a recent French national returning from living in South Africa. He is currently isolated and recovering well.

The man, who lived in the Haut-Rhin region near the Swiss border, when he returned, had taken the RT-PCR test after symptoms similar to COVID-19, the ministry said in a statement. The test conducted in Switzerland was positive and was reported by the Swiss health authorities to their French peers.

Both the National Reference Center for Emerging Viral Diseases (CRIVE Switzerland) and the National Reference Center for Respiratory Disease Viruses (CNR France) confirmed the test sample series with the difference 501 V2.

He did not find people in danger.

On 25 December, France discovered the new variant of COVID-19 circulating in the UK, in a man from the city of Tours returning from London.

Reports of new cases had prompted authorities to set up a system for detecting and monitoring cases of infection or variability from travelers returning from the UK and South Africa, to the extent distributed in France.

The Ministry of Health has made it mandatory to present a negative test carried out less than 72 hours in advance for anyone returning to France from the UK and South Africa.
