Fosu-Mensah reveals who made Man Utd’s call after jumping to Germany

The Dutch defender, who has been at Old Trafford since 2014, ended his tie with the Red Devils when he joined Bayer Leverkusen

Timothy Fosu-Mensah insists his decision was to leave Manchester United for Bayer Leverkusen in January, with the Dutch defender jumping on a boat at Old Trafford rather than being pushed.

The 23-year-old had been with the Red Devils since 2014, allowing him to step out of a notorious academy system when he became a senior professional.

Game time, however, was difficult to come by in Manchester and, after seeing an unfortunate injury push ahead, a new challenge has now been included in the Bundesliga.

What was said?

Fosu-Mensah has stated PA Sports as I left heavyweight from the Premier League: “Yes, it was my decision.

“It was difficult because I broke my ACL after getting a loan at Fulham. I was out for a long time. I came back, [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer gave me the summaries, they promoted the option in my contract.

“Solskjaer has been good to me but in the end I didn’t play much and obviously, when you’re 22, 23, 24 you have to play.

“I didn’t play much and I wanted to play, and I think the best decision in the end was for me to go somewhere else to get more minutes. ”

How many games did Fosu-Mensah play for Man Utd?

The high-ranking Dutchman was slammed away from Ajax in 2014, with United buying into apparent potential.

A major stage was made in February 2016, with Fosu-Mensah making his arch at left-back in a 3-2 home win over Arsenal.

He was expected to start from then on, with a new long-term contract signed, but after reaching 21 appearances for United, the exit door was opened.

Loan spells at Fulham and Crystal Palace delivered regular game time, but only nine more rounds would be brought back at Old Trafford – bringing him to 30 in total – before he went to Germany.
