Messi vs. Ronaldo (Reuters)
The initiative of the big teams in Europe to retire from the UEFA and establish their own “Super League” forces the organization, which is heavily criticized, to carry out reforms in the Champions League every few years. This time it seems that the change will be quite drastic and radical. According to a report in Spain the offer is expected to be approved next month and the new format will start in the 2024/25 season. The plan is that it will last until 2033.
So what are we planning for in the UEFA? The number of groups will increase from 32 to 36. Today the teams are divided into eight houses of four and after the home stage the 16 teams that finished in first and second places go up to eighth. The new method will be completely different.
In the first stage, from September to January, each team will play 10 games. The first eight will automatically advance to the eighth and the teams from 9th to 24th places will play in the playoffs to defeat the other eight newcomers.
In addition, there will be a limit of five or six delegations per country. Four representatives will be determined as follows: the two teams with the highest UEFA ranking that do not receive an automatic ticket to the Champions League, another team from the fifth league in the UEFA rankings (now France) and the sixth league in the UEFA rankings as of 2024 (now Portugal) will receive Automatic representative at the houses stage.

Another change will be made on game days. In addition to Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the new Champions League will also be played four times a season on Thursdays, which have so far been dedicated to the Europa League and from next season the Conference League will also be played with the participation of Israeli teams.
UEFA will have to secure an upgraded financial reward for the big teams to put aside the idea of the “Super League”, at least until the next crisis with the European football organization, which is desperately trying to revive its senior enterprise.
