LEVEL 1

Lose weight fast

We recommend that you start with this intensive phase, if possible. By sticking to 800 calories a day, every day, for at least two weeks, you will start losing weight and improving metabolic health. (The tasty recipes here are all under 400 calories per serving.) After two or three weeks, stop to think about how it goes. If you are losing weight and not struggling with the diet, keep going. You can follow this approach until you reach your goal, or for up to 12 weeks.

LEVEL 2

Interim employment with the New 5: 2

When you get close to your target weight, or if you’re struggling with the rapid rate of weight loss, you can move to an interim fasting pattern – eating 800 cals on just a day or two a week. Your weight loss rate will be slower on this regimen, but it has been proven to be very stable, and one of the most effective ways to lose and keep weight off.

LEVEL 3

The maintenance program

Once you have achieved your goal, continue the Mediterranean healthy eating method, not counting calories but using portion control. You can go ahead using most of these recipes; just add extra protein and a few tablespoons of high-fiber, unrefined carbs, such as beans, lentils or whole grains, here and there and you’re ready for life. You can enjoy it from time to time, but try to keep a diet low in sugar and moderately low in starchy carbs to help prevent weight gain from receding.
