Fernando Alonso has been involved in a road accident while cycling in Switzerland.

The two-time world champion is “conscious and well in himself” and is now awaiting further medical examinations Friday morning, his Alpine F1 team said in a statement.

The team says more updates will be released on Friday.

Italy Sport Gazzetta dello reports that Alonso was hit by a car while riding on roads near Lugano.

The newspaper reports that the Spaniard was taken to hospital for examinations, with X-rays showing a suspicious fracture, and that Alonso was being transferred to Bern for further investigations.

F1 pre-season trials begin in four weeks, with the racing season starting in Bahrain on March 26-28.

Alonso returns to F1 this year after two seasons of racing in other divisions, with the 39-year anniversary with the team that won his two world titles in 2005 and 2006.

The driver McLaren and Ferrari won the World Sustainability Championship with Toyota in 2019, while also competing in the Indy Rally 500 and Dakar.

Alpine is the new name for the Renault team, with the Enstone costume going under rebranding ahead of the 2021 season.

Alonso completed several tests in the closing months of 2020 to prepare for his F1 return, making his full official test return at the end-of-season session in Abu Dhabi in December.
