According to a report by the Popular Mechanics website, over the next decade, a group of talented programmers and climate change scientists will work together to create a truly accurate model of the Earth digitally. The scientists will use this model to run simulations related to climate change. global warming and several other scenarios to better prepare for the consequences for the planet in the years to come. This Earth clone project is a collaborative effort between the European Center for Medium Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Agency for the Exploitation of Metabolic Satellites (EUMETSAT). The programming and computing for the project itself will take place at ETH Zurich and the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS). This project is being done to help achieve Europe ‘s goal of zero carbon neutrality by 2050.

What does the Twin Digital do?
The scientists will use data on climate change as well as human activities such as deforestation, industry and pollution to run simulations through a supercomputer on this digital model of the Earth. The simulation will help scientists predict and decide outcomes for these events. It will help scientists find out the possible impact of weather events as well as human structures – for example, what happens to the city of Venice which is basically located within a lake, when that water levels will eventually rise or whether or not the Tower of Effiel will rise in the wake of an earthquake.

ETH Zurich said in a statement that the new system model on Earth will truly represent almost every process on Earth’s surface. The simulation will be able to accurately predict the impact of humans on water, food and energy generation. All of this will be done in addition to climate change simulations that will accurately represent what the earth will look like if global warming is not stopped or reversed in the next few years. This digital model of the Earth will be an important tool for tackling climate change and making better decisions that will help the planet thrive.
