Emma Stone steps into Crowella de Ville’s shoes in a new Disney movie

In recent years we have witnessed a trend of works exploring the background stories of our favorite cinematic villains. Whether it’s the Netflix “Rached” series that follows sister Rachad from “The Cuckoo’s Nest” in her youth or Disney’s “Malificent” movies that focused on the witch from “Sleeping Beauty.” Now, Disney is continuing the trend with the new movie “Crowella” (Cruella), after all, is the background story of the villain Cruella de Ville from “On Dogs and Thieves” (101 Dalmatians).

The new film takes place in 1970s London and explores the deterioration of Estelle de Ville (played by Emma Stone) From a sought-after fashion designer to a puppy fur lover. Al Stone joins Emma Thompson (“Beauty and the Beast”) as the owner of the fashion house that hired Crowella.

The trailer gives us a glimpse into the special style they chose at Disney this time – a kind of psychological thriller laden with style, more reminiscent of the movie “Birds of Prey and the Stunning Harley Quinn” or series by Ryan Murphy (“American Horror”, “Rached”) than the live action movies of Disney from recent years.

The film was directed by Craig Gilpsey (“Me, Tonya”) and was written by Dana Fox (“What’s Happening in Vegas”) and Tony McNamara, the screenwriter of the “favorite” movie starring Stone and the TV series “The Great.” In addition to the pair of screenwriters, the film was also helped by the creator of the “Crazy Ex” series, Aline Brosh-Mekne, and the screenwriter of the “Venom” film, Kelly Marcel.

Besides Stone and Thompson will also star Mark Strong (“Shahazam”), Paul Walter Hauser (“Black on White”), Joel Fry (“Game of Thrones”), Kirby Howell-Baptiste (“The Good Place”) fEmily Bitcham (“Long live the Emperor”).

The last time we saw Crowella was in the 1996 live-action movie “101 Dogs and Thieves,” which is of course based on the 1961 Disney classic. In this version, Crowella played actress Glenn Close, who will serve as the producer in the new film.
