A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the Elazig region of eastern Turkey

ISTANBUL – A magnitude 5.3 earthquake shook the Elazig region of eastern Turkey on Sunday.

Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu tweeted that there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The quake struck at 09:37 am (0637 GMT), the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Directorate said. It was felt in several nearby areas.

Turkey has extensive crossing lines and frequent earthquakes.

In January, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck Elazig, killing 41 people in that province and nearby Malatya.

Another deadly earthquake struck the western port city of Izmir in October, killing 116 people.

The worst earthquake in Turkey in decades came in 1999, when a pair of strong earthquakes hit northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.
