Due to flooding: All entrances to Nahariya were blocked

All entrances to Nahariya in the north of the country were closed today (Sunday) to vehicular traffic by the police, due to flooding in the city caused by the heavy rains that fell in the area and caused the Ga’aton River to overflow.

Due to the floods, the police also closed some of the roads in the city: Hagaaton Boulevard – in the section between Weizmann Street and Sokolov Street, Weizmann Street – in the section between the Founders Junction and Szold Junction, and Sokolov Street – in the section between David Elazar and Rachel Maskit.

Police officers at the entrances to the city are diverting traffic to alternative roads. Police also closed Road 4 from the Shomeret junction to the north to traffic, and asked customs to drive through Road 8510.

In floods that took place in the city last year, 38-year-old Motti Ben Shabbat drowned after helping civilians stuck with their vehicles in floods in the north of the city. He was swept away by the current, and thus found his death.

Raviv Cohen, a friend of Ben Shabbat who worked with him to rescue the family who was swept away by a car, described the moments of drama: “Mutti and I saw people screaming for help to get them out of the car in a flood. We took off our clothes, jumped into the water and pulled them out. “I started yelling at divers to look for him in depth. Mutti told me a moment before he was swept away that he felt he had run out of power and that he was going to faint. He was swept ashore through the drain pipe.”

According to Meteo-Tech, Maalot Tarshiha is the city with the largest amount of rain that fell in the 24 hours between 12:00 yesterday and today, with 80 mm of rain. Other places where a large amount of rain fell are Kibbutz Elrom (50 Mm), Safed (47 mm), Haifa (40 mm), Kibbutz Shamir (35 mm), Kidmat Zvi (32 mm) and Haifa (40 mm).

It will be colder than usual, and in the evening the rains are expected to weaken and diminish.
