There is a new chairman for the handball association. The general meeting of the union elected tonight (Tuesday) the members of the board, who authorized Doron Gelfand for the position. Gelfand replaces Tal Lavie, who during his last term also served as Miko Sarfati as chairman for a year.

Gelfand, 68, an accountant by profession, comes from the industry. He was in the past (between 1968 and 1985) a player, captain and handball coach at Arazim Ramat Gan and Hapoel Gaderot. He was a player for the Israeli national team, with which he participated in international missions, including world championships and qualifiers for the Olympic Games in Montreal. Gelfand is one of the most prominent goal scorers in Israeli handball, and was a very diverse player who played in several positions – center, liaison and pivot.

Gelfand, one of the owners of the leading Jordanian-Gelfand-Aberman & Co. accounting firm, specializes in the field of real estate in the United States. He is also educated in physical education. After receiving congratulations and good luck at the first meeting held tonight, he explained his vision for promoting handball: “My goal is to increase the number of activists in the industry, and expand the number of cities and towns where there is handball activity in young and old, both women and men. I will work to increase “The budget of the industry, both from the Ministry of Sports and from the local councils and other supporters, together with my friends.”

Gelfand added: “I will focus on marketing, with the aim of increasing the amount of TV broadcasts, in the men’s and women’s games, and of course – together with my friends – to continue the process of promoting the national project and Israeli teams, hoping that players continue to play in Europe and contribute to the industry.” .

The aforesaid general meeting approved the members of the board – some of them continue from the last term and even before it – including those who served as acting chairman Avi Kahlon, deputy chairman and chairman of the professional committee Dudi Pelach, and veteran board members – Ofer Kushmero, Pini Leibowitz, Tuvia Yogev, Tzachi Weiss, Monse Bar (chair of the women’s committee), Moran Mesika and Izo Weiner.

In addition to them, Eyal Frolinger, chairman of Maccabi Tel Aviv, returns for another term, and is joined by new board members, including past players and managerial and professional positions in the associations – Arik Alkalay, Shela Carmi, Amit Cohen, Tamar Yerushalmi, Amir Drucker, Michal Etzion, Yotam Eleazar and Gabriela Weissman. Guy Matzionim (CPA in place of Avi David) was elected to the Audit Committee, along with David Marig and CPA Hemi Kodman.

In another matter, the High Court set a hearing for the handball association’s petition against the Ministries of Culture and Sports and Health, on discrimination and inequality compared to the football and basketball industries – to be held on Monday.
