DJI says people can still buy and use their drones in the U.S. following an export ban

DJI says people in the U.S. will still be able to buy and use their drones and other products despite being named on the Department of Commerce’s Unity List. The Chinese drone giant was blacklisted on Friday for “enabl[ing] large-scale human rights abuses in China through abstract or high-tech genetic collection and analysis ”- this is probably a reference to DJI donating drones and other technology to the Chinese government for use in the their Muslim detention camps in Xinjiang district.

“DJI is disappointed in the decision of the US Department of Commerce. Consumers in America can continue to buy and use DJI products on a regular basis, ”the company said in a statement. The edge. “DJI remains committed to developing the most innovative products in the industry that define our company and benefit the world.”

The company declined to provide further details about what they think will happen as a result of being named on the entity list. Being on the list usually means that U.S. companies are banned from exporting technology to blacklisted companies. Not only does DJI sell products to consumers, but because it is far removed as the market leader, its technology is used by all kinds of companies that need drones or cameras cameras -hand.

This is not the first time access to Chinese drones has been targeted by the U.S. government, mostly due to security concerns. The Justice Department banned the purchase of drones made overseas by agency money in October, and the Interior Department said it would shut down its drone fleet while it looked into allegations of espionage. and cyberattacks. DJI has pushed back against many of these actions, saying allegations of national security crimes are unfounded.
