Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson will not be trading this offseason, head coach David Culley has asked.

Watson has formally requested a trade but Culley – the Texans’ first-year coach, who has been in the job for just over a month – remains unchallenged in his stated intention to keep Watson in Houston.

“It’s not a matter of changing anyone’s mind,” said Culley, who spoke to Watson via Zoom recently. “We’re committed to it, and we’re going to move forward. “

Asked how the Texans knew Watson was committed to the team, Culley said: “He ‘s a Houston Texan.”

The Texans did not reveal details of the conversation with Watson – and Culley reiterated Thursday that he was unwilling to share anything between the two.

Since his 12th overall draft in 2017, Watson has tossed for 14,539 career passing yards and 104 touchdowns, as well as running for 1,677 yards and 17 scores.

Houston defeated Watson of his top weapon last offseason when general manager and head coach Bill O’Brien traded DeAndre Hopkins’ wide receiver to the Arizona Cardinals.

The Texans 2020 finished third in the AFC South at 4-12 after winning their division title in each of the previous two seasons, getting as far as the Divisional Tour in 2019 where they dropped passed a 24-point lead against Kansas City Chiefs.

Culley’s message about Watson is unchanged from the media’s formal access to coach and new Texans general manager Nick Caserio.

The vision ahead presents a full set of challenges, including a limited wage cap and capital draft.

The Texans traded their first-round pick – which became No. 3 overall – to the Miami Dolphins in the contract of Laremy Tunsil, one of the many trades made by O’Brien who took his -integrating high bricks.

“Before we take a few questions: Organically, we want to reiterate our commitment to Deshaun Watson. We have no interest in trading the player,” Caserio said in February.
