Depay linked to Barcelona: I may stay at Lyon until the end of the season

Linked to transfer to Catalan club, the promoter says he may not move in January

Lyon star Memphis Depay has said he may end the season with the Ligue 1 giants after being linked with Barcelona for most of the summer.

Depay is still linked with a move to Barca, and could be ready to move there for free as Lyon ‘s contract expires at the end of the season.

The Dutch international’s links with Barca have been heavily supported by his relationship with Ronald Koeman, who coached Depay with the Dutch national team before taking over the La Liga giants in the summer.

After winning 59 international caps, Depay has scored 21 goals for the Netherlands, appearing for the third-place finishers at the 2014 World Cup in Russia.

Depay hit twice in Lyon ‘s 3-2 win over Lens on Wednesday as they moved three points clear at the top.

While linked to a move, Depay said he may end the deal with Lyon instead of leaving this month before his contract expires.

“I’m happy here. We have a great team, I like the president, we’ll see what happens,” he told Canal + after Wednesday ‘s win.

“The president and I know what has happened in the last four seasons. Let’s keep going and enjoy my presence. I may be here until the end of the season.

“Let’s focus on Saturday’s game, let’s be happy, we have a great team.”

Only Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe (16) has been directly involved in more Ligue 1 goals than Depay (14) this season.

But no player has created more chances than Depay’s 42 for Lyon top flight.

Depay has also created 10 great chances, with only Marseille forward Florian Thauvin (12) and PSG striker Angel Di Maria (11) creating more.

The Dutch star first moved to Lyon in 2017 after struggling to break up with Manchester United.

Depay moved to Old Trafford in 2015, but scored just seven goals in 53 appearances during his time in England.

Since arriving in France, Depay has fired 64 goals in 155 games, helping Lyon reach the Champions League semi-finals last season.

As things stand, Lyon are in action again on Saturday when they visit Rennes.
