Democrats call on Biden to give sole authority to launch nuclear strikes

Dozens of Democratic lawyers are calling on Joe Biden to give the same presidential authority to launch nuclear weapons weeks after Nancy Pelosi warned the ‘unhinged’ that Donald Trump could use them

  • Nearly three dozen Democratic lawmakers have signed a letter calling on President Joe Biden to give his sole authority to launch a nuclear strike
  • The letter notes that former presidents have ‘displayed behavior that prompted other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment’
  • In particular, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed concerns about a ‘non-stop president’ over former President Donald Trump after January 6

Nearly three dozen Democratic lawmakers have signed a letter urging President Joe Biden to give him the same authority to launch a nuclear strike.

‘Selling one person with this authority carries real risks,’ read the letter, according to Politico and Fox News, written by California Democratic Rep. Jimmy Panetta. ‘Former presidents have threatened to invade other countries with nuclear weapons or conduct on display that prompted other officials to express concern about the president’s judgment. ‘

One such president, the former President Donald Trump, had a state of mind related to lawyers especially after the January 6 revolution, which took place after weeks of Trump refusing to accept that he lost the election to Biden.

Trump was inducted into the House of Representatives for inciting that uprising, however, he was acquitted earlier this month by the Senate, which required two-thirds of the voting group for his conviction.

On Jan. 8, two days after the MAGA attack, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she had spoken to the Chair of Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, on preventing a ‘non-stop president’ from launching a nuclear strike.

She said she spoke to Milley ‘to discuss the measures available to prevent an unstable president from starting armed enemies or accessing the launch codes and ordering a nuclear strike. ‘

‘The President’s position without this stop could not have been more dangerous,’ a House spokesman warned.

U.S. presidents are able to unilaterally order an armed strike and are followed by what is known as ‘nuclear football,’ in which the codes are relevant.

‘While it is likely that any president would consult with advisers before ordering a nuclear attack, it is not necessary to do so. It is the duty of the military to carry out the order if they deem it lawful under the laws of war. Under the current role of U.S. nuclear forces, that attack would happen in minutes, ‘the letter warned.

The letter offers a number of options, including that the president obtain approval from other members of the line of success such as the vice-president and speaker of the House.

‘The president may not remove any of them unless they agree … to agree to a launch order,’ the letter said.

The vice president will have nuclear football with him or her.

During Trump’s impeachment test, Democratic managers showed pictures of Vice President Mike Pence then, deceived by football, getting to safety only in good time.
