Democrat convener Steve Cohen says Trump supporters may want to ‘do something’ for Biden

Democratic convener Steve Cohen suggested Monday that Trump supporters may be within the National Guard named defending Joe Biden ‘wanting to do something’ for the new president.

Cohen said he remembered the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her own corps and suggested suspicion of Trump supporters would come from within the National Guard units.

‘The 90-man National Guard is a bit strange, and only about 20 per cent of white men voted for Biden,’ he said. ‘You have to do that in the Guard, which is largely more conservative … it seems that no more than 25 per cent of the people there are defending our vote for Biden. The other 75 percent are in the large class of people who might want to do something, ‘Cohen said, speaking to CNN.

Anchor Jim Sciutto objected to cohen saying that automatically being a Trump voter would not mean that person was a threat of violence. ‘

‘I mean – you won’t have voted for Trump to pose a threat within you,’ Sciutto said.

‘I know, does anything you have seen determine the extent of the danger within this, if it exists?’ Sciutto asked.

Cohen did not provide any evidence to substantiate his claim but explained how he would look for those who would be seen as a potential threat.

‘You draw a circle, it’s the first circle of people who worked for Trump and not for Biden, as long as people would be in the suspect’s zone,’ he said. ‘The suspect group is large.’

Cohen quickly came in for criticism of his remarks with Washington Post intelligence confirmer Glenn Kessler urging him to say that Trump’s supporters could be a ‘hitter’.

‘Hmmm, does a Democratic communicator really want to say that if you vote for Trump you might be a striker?’ Kessler tweeted. ‘What happened to the idea that armed people are professionals and do their job regardless of political preferences?’

Steve Krakauer, editor of Fourth Watch, a media newsletter, described the idea as ‘completely remorseful’.

‘This is completely regrettable. It’s hard to argue that this kind of labeling of our weapons is anything but seditious as well. ‘

Conservative writer Andrew Egger also went into the criticism.

‘Carefully judging members of the military as security threats based solely on the fact that they appear to be white and male and very silly and dangerous to me.’

‘Entering the spirit of #MLKDay by judging people by the color of their skin and not by the content of their character,’ said Cam Edwards, publisher of a gun-promotion website.
